Protecting your home in winter not only gives you peace of mind but can also save you money in the long run. The winter months can have a negative affect on the condition of your home, and as we’re all spending more time at home at the moment, now is the perfect time to tick some jobs off the list to keep everything running smoothly!
Keep pipes flowing
During the winter months, pipes can freeze and burst leaving you with no heating at the coldest time of the year and a hefty plumbing bill. Put your heating on regularly, or on low, to avoid them freezing over.
Bleed your radiators
Bleed your radiators regularly to keep them running smoothly and improve energy efficiency in your home. Make sure you turn the heating off before you do this, to avoid burning yourself with the hot water running through the pipes.
Stay on top of boiler repairs
Have your boiler serviced annually to keep on top of any issues and spot faults early. If your boiler is still within its guarantee this will be mandatory, but it’s a good idea to have an annual service outside of its warranty to help it last longer. A broken boiler is the last thing you need – especially in winter!
Keep the heat in
Fixing faulty seals on windows and doors can help to keep your heating in, reducing the cost of your energy bill, plus, using draft excluders means heat can’t escape from any gaps under your doors, keeping you toasty on those cold winter days.
Keep drainage clear
Winter brings cold, wet and windy weather, meaning gutters can become blocked with leaves and other debris. Have your gutters cleaned out regularly to avoid leaks and damp problems that can create problems for your home.
Power cuts are an inconvenience at the best of times, but one in winter can feel even worse. Make sure you’ve got a stock of torches, batteries and candles in case of a power cut and that you can access them easily in an emergency.
Check smoke alarms
Check your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms regularly to make sure the batteries are still working and have a spare stock of batteries so that you can replace them quickly when they do run out. It can be easy to forget but could save yours and your families lives’ in the future.
Review your home insurance
Review your home insurance policy annually to make sure you’re covered should the unexpected happen. Check that you’re covered for all the things that are important to you, from the building itself to the things you fill your house with to make it your home.
