Moving into a new house can be exciting; whether It’s your first time or not, a new chapter begins. Whilst you look forward to the future and the memories you’ll make, it’s normal to feel overwhelmed in the run up to moving, so we’ve covered some top tips below to help you prepare…
Preparing for the big day
Your solicitor should provide you with a completion date, where you’ll take ownership of your property and move in. Although the date might not be set in stone, you should have a good idea of when you’re looking to complete the purchase of the property, allowing you to plan and giving you something to work towards.
If you are currently renting, you may need to give notice to your landlord, following the terms of your contract. Take advantage of any spare time prior to moving house and start boxing up items and furniture. This is a great opportunity to clear out unwanted items and start afresh. As you approach your moving day, consider what time you will start, and how you are going to transport your furniture.
When the day arrives, make sure you’re up early and prepared. By this point, everything should be in boxes and ready to move, whether you’ve decided to transport items and furniture yourself, or use a moving company.
One last check of your home will be helpful; opening drawers and cupboards in every room to make sure you haven’t missed or left anything behind. Ensure the house is clean and the windows and doors are locked so it’s safe and secure for the new owners.
When you reach your new home, the next steps are up to you. Whether you’d like to take a quick or gradual approach, there’s no rush to organise your personal belongings or move furniture around. Enjoy the moment and take your time, this is where you turn a house into a home.
Don’t forget, it’s important to update your address with your bank or building society, or any other providers you use on a regular basis. Large organisations like the HMRC or DVLA will also require your new address.
