What to do when a loved one passes away

Two people holding hands to comfort each other

We’re sorry to hear about your loss and want to make it as easy as possible for you to notify us about the death of a loved one. You can use this page to let us know about the bereavement and access resources which may help during this difficult time.

How to notify us of a death

The Death Notification Service is a free online service designed to make the process of notifying banks and building societies easier.

You can use it to let us know about any accounts your loved one held with us – as well as those with any other banks or building societies. It’s a quick and easy service to use and is completely free of charge.

You can find out more about the service on the Death Notification Service's website (External), including a list of FAQs (External).

If you need to notify us of a death, follow the link below and you’ll be guided through the process.

Useful links

The ‘Tell us once’ service allows you to inform all the relevant government departments when someone dies, including HMRC, DWP and the DVLA. You can find out more on their Tell us once page (External).

Should you require emotional support in dealing with your bereavement, free support is available from Cruse Bereavement Care (External) and the Samaritans (External).
